Uncharted 4 time-lapse video shows the design process in action – Thumbsticks

Unexplored 4 is a really cute game. Keep your eyes peeled for our next feature on the surprisingly entertaining photo mode to see how pretty it can be (even in the hands of a keen hobbyist).

If you’ve ever tried creating an environment in a game engine like Unreal Engine 4 or Unity 5 – maybe you’ve seen one of these quick creation tutorials on YouTube and thought it sounded pretty easy to create beautiful worlds – then you’ll know firsthand that this is a more complex process than you might think. Even if you’re good at composing a crisp photo, or you’re skilled with a brush or pencils, it can be surprisingly difficult to put everything together properly.

Environmental art in video games is an entirely different ethereal skill, in the grand scheme of the visual arts world, and must be celebrated. Just see how much something like Fire watch Where Everyone’s gone for the kidnapping turned out, and you’ll get the idea.

We of course see the end result when we play the game, and we often see the concept art that inspired it, but we rarely see the transition between the two. Fortunately, Naughty Dog environmental artist Anthony Vaccaro has put together a Unexplored 4 time-lapse video, showing to what extent the Malagasy environments were constituted in Nathan Drake’s farewell adventure.
