SNC-Lavalin selected to design and build tooling systems for Bruce Nuclear Generating Station’s life extension program

MONTREAL, April 19, 2022 /CNW Telbec/ – Candu Energy Inc., a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group (TSX: SNC), has been selected by Bruce Power to provide design and engineering services for the fuel channel installation tooling at Unit 3 of the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario. The mandate also includes manufacturing and testing, and is part of the larger life extension program for the world’s largest operating nuclear facility. SNC-Lavalin is a trusted solutions provider in the field, having previously provided tooling solutions for Unit 6 at Bruce Power.

“Bruce Power has acknowledged that SNC-Lavalin, as steward and original equipment manufacturer of CANDU® technology, is uniquely positioned to provide reliable solutions for a core element of their CANDU reactor design,” said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, SNC-Lavalin. “Our nuclear team has intimate knowledge of CANDU reactor fuel channels. This allows us to produce the specific systems that support the refurbishment of CANDU reactors. This mandate to provide remotely controlled fuel channel installation tools will directly support Bruce Power’s transformational life extension program to add over 30 years to the operational life of the site.”

The tooling systems will enable the installation of fuel channels (CANDU reactor core components) at Unit 3. The delivery of the systems is part of Bruce Power’s major component replacement project and related refurbishment of the reactor.

SNC-Lavalin also delivered fuel channel removal and installation tooling for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario. Building on its unparalleled expertise with CANDU technology, SNC-Lavalin’s nuclear business (including its predecessor) has been involved in tooling work for every CANDU reactor life extension in the world at this day.

“We have a strong partnership with SNC-Lavalin and their expertise in CANDU technology is essential to our life extension program,” said Eric Chassard, Executive Vice President, Projects and Engineering at Bruce Power. “This partnership will enable us to successfully deliver our Unit 3 major component replacement, which will begin in 2023, and when complete will provide clean, reliable power to Ontario residents and businesses for decades.

Bruce Power provides low-emission nuclear power to one in three homes, hospitals, schools and businesses in Ontario. Each of its reactors is capable of producing enough carbon-free electricity to meet the annual needs of a city the size of Ottawa. It also produces medical isotopes to keep medical equipment sterilized and help fight diseases around the world. By refurbishing its nuclear fleet and securing site operation until 2064, Bruce Power’s CANDU reactors will continue to provide low-carbon, safe and reliable energy. Bruce Power’s life extension program will also provide approximately 22,000 jobs in Ontario. SNC-Lavalin’s extensive nuclear expertise includes providing end-to-end solutions throughout the nuclear life cycle. This includes new nuclear construction, plant operation, reactor life extension and end-of-life management, as well as decommissioning and site remediation work.
