MUMBAI, India, May 18, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Balwant Sheth School of Architecture (BSSA) was established in 2007 at a time when India was undergoing dynamic change due to the liberalization of its economy and major changes in the cultural sphere. The school had the challenge of imagining the architect for these new times and new challenges. With changing user demands and the proliferation of new building materials and technologies, the world of architecture and the built environment was undergoing a sea change. The school opened with the intention of examining a designer’s practice, engaging with multiple disciplines, and laying the foundation for a research-driven practice.

Recognized by the Council on Architecture (COA), the 5-year Bachelor of Architecture program is designed to generate and debate new ways of teaching and learning in architecture. The architectural profession today has new roles and responsibilities compared to the conventional model of the service provider and a technocrat delivering smart building solutions through rigorous academic and field projects. The main attempt of the program is to expand the opportunities of architecture and design to new dimensions of fields ranging from socio-cultural studies to management studies. To achieve this, the program aims to constantly adapt and infuse new concepts both from a technological and management point of view through various programs, including the elective program, and para-academic workshops, but also by having students complete a 15 to 18 week internship in architecture, planning and construction companies. All of this offers 360 degree exposure based on studio learning, interactive sessions with industry leaders, case studies and other engaging projects. The Institute also has a dedicated placement cell to ensure students land on their feet.

BSSA offers a five-year bachelor’s degree in architecture according to the standards of the Council of Architecture. To apply, one must have passed the 10+2 exam scheme with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and also achieve 50% overall marks in the 10+2 exam. They must also score a minimum of 70 points out of 200 in the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA). The registration process includes filling admission forms and other similar formalities, after which a merit list is declared based on the individual scores.

Launched in 2018, the Master of Architecture program is a natural 2-year extension of the Bachelor’s program to extend its philosophy to advanced design experimentation in contemporary architecture and urban environments. Given the rapid increase in urbanization, the course is designed to train professionals to experiment and develop new innovative design strategies to create architectural conditions and structures that use design to build human and creative environments , as well as committed companies. The course offers digital prototyping and fabrication workshops as well as an international curriculum and numerous live and interactive sessions with prominent industry leaders.

To advance the school’s ideas and programs in the field, a few years ago the school also established a master’s program in architecture. To be part of the master’s program, it is necessary that students achieve a minimum of 50% overall marks in the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) course or any other equivalent course recognized by the Council of Architecture. A committee set up by the school will review the candidate’s portfolio of work, as well as the technical requirements, after which he will be invited for a personal interview. To be eligible for admissions, students must qualify for the personal interview conducted by the Center of Interior-Environment Design. Applicants must achieve a minimum of 50% overall marks on their 10+2 exam or equivalent in any stream. Alternatively, one can hold a 10+3 (diploma) any stream recognized by central and state government. The registration process includes filling out the forms followed by a personal interview in the event of pre-selection.
