Project by Irving Alvarez (M+M, 2021) Instructor: William Virgil

The Making+Meaning summer studio program exposes participants to a wide range of techniques within a conceptual design framework, pitting the everyday against the unusual to create exploratory content and experiences.

Making+Meaning (M+M) is a core SCI-Arc program that challenges people from different backgrounds to employ new and innovative methods of design exploration, regardless of their previous level of expertise. For those with a design background, students will expand their existing skills or inform a potential career change by creating a body of work that can form part of a full portfolio for graduate applications. In addition, no prior architectural experience is necessary.

Beginning with a series of assignments that teach the fundamentals of design, Making+Meaning is designed to expand the complexity of students’ design thinking as well as their ability to create a personal aesthetic language. During four weeks of intensive workshops on designing, representing and compiling portfolios, M+M students will receive advice and feedback from SCI-Arc professors and prominent guest speakers in the development of their projects, which provides participants with diverse perspectives and experienced knowledge of design issues. while generating a portfolio of creative work.
